Ingredients
For One Cocktail
- 1.5 ounces (50 ml) gin
- 1 ounce (30 ml) orange juice
- 1 ounce (30 ml) simple syrup (recipe for spiced cranberry simple syrup below)
- 1 large egg white*
- soda water to taste
Spiced Cranberry Simple Syrup
- 1 cup (240 ml) water
- 1 cup (200 grams) granulated sugar
- 1 cup (100 grams) cranberries
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 2 whole star anise
- 1.5-inch (4cm) fresh ginger, peeled and cut into 3 pieces
Instructions
Spiced Cranberry Simple Syrup
- Heat the water and sugar in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring until the sugar has dissolved.
- Add the cranberries, cinnamon stick, star anise and ginger and simmer over medium-low heat for 15 minutes or until most of the cranberries have burst. Use the back of a spoon to mash any unburst cranberries to release their juices.
- Strain the syrup and store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
Spiced Gin Fizz
- Add the gin, orange juice, simple syrup and egg white to a cocktail shaker and vigorously dry shake (without ice) for 20 seconds.
- Add 5 ice cubes to the cocktail shaker and continue shaking until well-chilled.
- Strain the cocktail into a chilled glass and top with soda water.
Notes
Egg whites: I recommend using pasteurized eggs in this recipe if you have any concerns about consuming raw eggs. Pasteurized eggs have been treated to eliminate the risk of foodborne illnesses. For a vegan alternative, replace the egg white with 1 oz aquafaba.
